Level 2 focuses on basic theoretical knowledge that supports the reading of the brief verses of various heirmologic hymns. The hymns in the level 2 repertoire were chosen because they have the simple melodic structures with many repeated pitches, easy rhythmic patterns, the same text from mode to mode, no fthores, and are short. The goal of Level 2 is to give chanters a solid foundation in the 8 modes and 4 of the scales.
Chant the melody of simple heirmologic hymns in all 8 modes using parallage and the text of the hymn (repertoire, Mode Cards, Apichimata materials)
Chant ison for all 8 modes with and without music (Mode Playing Cards, Repertoire, Recordings)
Explain the melodic structure for each of the heirmologic modes (Mode Playing Cards, Repertoire, Recordings)
Identify all of interval symbols correctly, including flutters and compound symbols (Interval Playing Cards)
Identify the mode keys that correspond to the 8 apichimata they learned in Level 1 (Apichimata Bingo, Mode Cards, Repertoire)
Identify all Martyrie symbols correctly and explain their function (Martyrie & Fthores Cards)
Learn the rest of the heirmologic apichimata and all heirmologic mode keys (Mode Cards)
Here is what's to come...
Take dictation of heirmologic phrases (Interval Playing Cards)
Explain how the ison moves relative to the melody for each heirmologic mode (Mode Cards, Greek Letter Cards)
