The Parallage Phrases are the primary way to teach the basic interval symbols.
As you use these cards do not explain what the symbols mean before you chant the card. After you chant the phrase together ask your students to take a guess as what the new symbol means. The cards were created with a very specific progression so that students can figure out what symbols mean as they go. Learning through discovery is a very powerful way of learning.
There are 40 Level 1 Parallage Phrases as of the fall of 2014. I had planned on using the formulae from St. Anthony's Monastery to create a second level. I have found this to be unnecessary. My students have transitioned into reading hymns in English very well in the Level 1b Repertoire. I am currently testing the Level 1b repertoire with my students and working on compiling the following level. Students will proceed through most, if not all, of the heirmologic hymns from vespers and matins in Levels 1 & 2.
Intro Parallage Phrases
You can teach adult students the first 15 phrases (covering ison, oligon, and apostrophos) in the first lesson. For elementary age students you may want to stop after 6 or 8 phrases depending on your students' attention span and energy level. The phrases are meant to be printed two sided and cut up and put in a stack (in order). I will post directions on how to do so soon.
Parallage & Magic Notes
Pass out the Parallage Phrases and the Ni Pa Vou cards. Then have students put the scale cards in order going up vertically. Then pass out a pile of magic notes, placing them above the Parallage phrases. Next show students how the magic notes match the colors of the Ni Pa Vou cards, placing the corresponding magic note next to the card. Show them how to make the indigo color for ke by placing a blue magic note on a purple one.
Now start going through the Parallage phrases together. When you come to a phrase that is tricky for students, have them write out the phrase by placing the magic notes above the symbols on the phrases.**Revision--We have actually found it works better to place the magic notes below the symbols. This way the student touches the color and sees it in their periphery vision but is focusing on the symbol itself.
Level 1 Parallage Phrases
Hymns on Parallage
