Why Byzantine Beginnings?
In Byzantine Beginnings important introductory skills and content are broken up and mastered individually and then together through fun and interactive games. Ear training is paired with modal theory so that students understand what they hear. Students are able to skip octave based reading exercises and learn to read using theseis from vesperal hymns.
The curriculum was inspired by Music Mind Games, and includes a set repertoire of hymns, ByzB materials, ear training recordings and repertoire recordings, and multi sensory, interactive games. Byzantine Beginnings is a unique program for teaching chant that combines auditory, visual, tactile, and spatial elements which make learning to chant fun for people of all ages.
