Learning to chant with Byzantine Beginnings works!
Byzantine Chant and its notation system are complex, but Byzantine Beginnings courses are designed to separate out the complexity into manageable learn-able pieces. The lessons teach one step at a time, and there are built in games and exercises to help you master each skill.
The curriculum was inspired by Music Mind Games, and includes a set repertoire of hymns, ByzB materials, ear training recordings and repertoire recordings, and multi sensory, interactive games. Byzantine Beginnings is a unique program for teaching chant that combines auditory, visual, tactile, and spatial elements which make learning to chant fun for people of all ages.
Amy Hogg started Byzantine Beginnings began as a place to share her teaching tools. In 2017 she offered her first online class here and in subsequent years added more classes and another teacher---Samuel Herron. In 2020, Amy fufilled a long time dream, and along with Samuel and Gabriel Cremeens founded Trisagion School of Byzantine Music. Byzantine Beginnings courses will now be offered at the school, and Byzantine Beginnings materials will be sold on the school site.
