In this course students train their ears to hear and reproduce the pitches in the 1st and 2nd heirmologic modes (which use the diatonic and hard chromatic scales). Students learn to read Byzantine notation and work to develop reading fluency on both parallage and melody (with the text) using 1st and 2nd mode vesperal hymns.
General Session Schedule
Students will receive the course materials and homework assignments for the first unit at the Intro class. At each online meetup students will receive everything for the next unit. Homework is due by the next online meetup, but instructors appreciate it when things are handed in a few days earlier. Instructors will try to cover for each other in cases of illness or emergency, but classes may have to be rescheduled.
ByzB 101 classes are made up of 8 units that span over 16 weeks. Each course uses the flipped classroom model through Google Classroom. Students listen to the ear training recordings, repertoire recordings (male and female models), view the instructional videos, play the games and practice at their convenience during each 2 week unit. Students meet with the whole class for an hour long online session each unit. Students in the General Session + also meet privately with their teacher for a 20 minute session each unit. The online sessions give students a community in which they can practice and ask questions, while private lessons allow the teacher to assess the student’s progress and provide them with more tailored recommendations. The content covered in each class is equivalent to a 4 credit college class and students should expect to spend about 30 minutes studying each day. An audit option will be available at a later date. All three levels include:
- Speaking Parallage ear training & modal theory recordings
- Repertoire Recordings by male and female chanters
- Instructional videos
- Course book with guides to recordings and videos, and theory references
****Byzantine Beginnings Cards will be used in multiple courses and therefore are not included in the cost of courses. Some materials will be purchased ready made through ByzBeginnings and others will be PDFs that the student will need to print.****
$225 General Session
Receive access to the course materials listed above and go through the class with the support of a teacher. The teacher runs the course through Google Classroom and offers an hour online meetup session each unit so that students can practice skills/content and ask questions. Students receive feedback on assignments handed into the teacher. This is best for people for which structure, deadlines, and group learning are helpful.
$325 General Session +
With the General Session + option you get all of the benefits of the General session, plus you meet with the teacher for a 20 minute private session 8 times (scheduled privately with the teacher, one per unit). This allows the teacher to better assess progress and tailor the course to fit individual needs. This is best for people who want more support or really want to ace the class.
