In the last sight reading lesson you tried chanting the Theseis A Cards. If that went well, try chanting the Theseis B cards, following the same process you used before. Don’t expect to be able to chant the Theseis C and D cards until ByzB 102. The focus with Theseis C and D cards in this class is for you to be able to decode the symbols in parallage and read them fluently without pitch.
Spread out the Theseis A and/or B Cards and then sort your cards into two piles--1st mode phrases and 2nd mode phrases. Then sort them the phrases in each mode by their beginning martyrie-- Pa or Dhi.
Turn your ison machine on to a comfortable pa.
Chant the 1st mode apichima (plus crutch if needed) and then the theseis that start from pa. Then, chant the 1st mode theseis that start from dhi.
Chant the 2nd mode apichima (plus crutch if needed) and then the theseis that start from pa. Then, chant the 2nd mode theseis that start from dhi.
Often beginners can get stuck in the 2nd mode and have trouble switching back to 1st mode (it’s all vou’s fault!) This is why you are starting with 1st mode theseis first. If you want to challenge yourself, start with the 2nd mode theseis first. For a trickier challenge mix up starting pitches or modes!
This is a simple game that you can play with the Theseis Cards. Play this game every day as this is a really important skill and it only takes a few minutes.
Cut out the Theseis D Cards. Read (say) the parallage for each card as quickly as you can.
Time yourself to see how long it takes you to get through the stack of cards.
Play the game a few times and see if you can get faster.
How long did it take you?
Are there any symbols that you found tricky? If so, play Set, Telos, or Spit to practice them.
Once you have mastered the new cards, mix your Theseis D Cards with your Theseis A, B and C Cards for future practice and review.
